Texas vs. UCF on ESPN in 2007?

Talks are under way for the Texas Longhorns to play Central Florida in Orlando for an ESPN game in 2007. In exchange for the home date, UCF would play twice in Austin in future years.

UCF assistant athletic director John Marini confirmed talks are under way between UCF and Texas for future football games. The 2007 game would be in Orlando -- the first game in UCF's new on-campus stadium -- and would be televised by ESPN. In return, UCF would play two games at Texas later this decade.

Some people are going to knock it, but I see this as win-win for both schools.

UT gets to play in the backyard of some Florida recruits, gets a nice trip out of the game, and still gets the national TV exposure in a game they probably win handily.

UCF, on the other hand, gets to face off with a national powerhouse and raise the stature of their program on national TV. Even if you take a whooping, which could happen, at least you're playing on the big stage. Getting the dates with the big boys can really help a mid-major's stature a la TCU.

I am not in favor of this at all. Yeah as of late, Texas has added Ohio State to their schedule to increase the strength of their schedule but to add UCF will be a huge mistake. Texas will just get knocked again for the lack of schedule. If UCF wants to boost their schedule and be in the light of the national audience then play FSU or UF.

It seems like UCF is taking the FSU Bowden route to fame: Being a team that will play anybody. Well, to get there they have to win some of those top 10 games. Anyway, I commend the effort. It would be great to see another good Football team in Florida: the greatest Football State in the entire Union. I think it will be fun to watch, if not just for the underdog theme.

In response to comment #1, UCF is already slated to play the big florida schools. George O'Leary has stated that UCF intends to play 2 florida schools a year.

As far as hurting Texas's strength of schedule, the rumor is the game is dependent on this seasons performance for the Golden Knights. If they keep up last years pace, then its game on. If they don't, ESPN will find a new matchup.

Sounds like a win/win to me.

Who cares about Texas!! We are scheduled to play Miami in 08,09 and 10. With 2008 being @ UCF. Now that is a real opponent.

    Zack,

If you don't think the defending national champion is a "real opponent," then I don't know what to say to you.

    Zack,

I think you should wake up and smell the garbanzo beans. Miami's program is on the decline and migh be a real stinker if they don't turn things around quickly. Beating Texas would be much more monumental than beating a burned out miami squad. Coker's got to go!!!

Thanks Zack Did you watch the Miami vs Colorado Game? Colorado played them a game.Lets see Texas beat Colorado Twice that year. Scoring about a 120 points.Texas beat Missouri and Kansas, and they both won their bowls. Texas beat Ohio State in the horseshoe, and A&M at Kyle feild. They shut out a good Baylor team 63-0 in Waco. What else happened? Back to Back Rose Bowl Victories over Michigan and USC.DiD I fail to mention Oklahoma and Oklahoma State on the road.
Seems like the Florida teams are always overrated and the Texas teams underrated Thats OK

Within the next decade UCF will become the largest university in the nation--and--the will become a sports powerhouse.

Nice work Tomcat! I think the UCF game will be a joke. This year is going to be interesting to watch with our two Freshman qbs and going into the ohio game with 2 linebackers suspended is scarry but I think that we will still come out strong!

Paul Brothers, you might have a point about size. We're already the 7th biggest school in the country, behind only University of Florida in our state (FSU and UofM aren't even close in size).

Our sports programs will take longer to ramp up. Most don't realize our baseball program is already top notch...basketball leaves something to be desired (but you can only rebuild one sport at a time)...but football is going to come around thanks to a serious head coach, state of the art training facilities (I went on a recent campus tour with some other alumi and almost crapped myself they were that nice), and a new stadium go a long way with helping get the good recruits. And that's the real challenege, keeping the guys who don't go to FSU, UofF, and Miami in state and at UCF istead of going to Alabama, USC, Clemson, or other schools in the SEC and Southeast in general.

And remember, USF is getting stronger too, so Florida football growth is just going to be all that harder for UCF with two programs fighting for the #4 spot.
