Alabama DC Kines to Texas?

With the hiring of former Texas DC Gene Chizik as Head Coach at Iowa State, the Longhorns suddenly find themselves in need of a Defensive Coordinator, in theory. (I say in theory because technically Texas already has one defensive coordinator - Duane Akina - who was Co-Defensive Coordinator with Chizik, but I digress.)

Kines spoke at an Alabama press conference and took limited questions from the media.

“I spoke with Coach (Shula) last night,” Kines said. “This is the greatest game in America. Sometimes it’s not a very good business.”

Kines said the staff of Alabama assistants would continue to go on the road recruiting, and would see to the well-being of the current players. He said his time as interim head coach would be “completely focused on the student athlete.”

“We don’t want them to get lost or fall through the crack on a day-to-day basis,” Kines said. “That focus is not going to change, and the staff, we’re going to work 16-17 hours a day like we’ve been doing.”

Kines re-affirmed his commitment to Alabama and the players, insisting that his focus would be the day-to-day operations - academics, strength and conditioning, recruiting and bowl preparation.

Not so fast my friend....

Alabama DC Joe Kines, who will be the interim Alabama coach until a replacement can be found for Mike Shula, was rumored to be on a plane from Birmingham to Austin to interview for the open Texas DC job.

Plane: N41NW
IDM AVIATION SERVICES-B LLC (AUSTIN TX)

Committed to the 'Bama players... or committing to Texas??

UPDATE

OK, after working out the timeline and confirming (on video) that Kines was at the Alabama press conference (2p CST), I did a little more back checking on our mystery flight.

As fate would have it, the Texas plane (N41NW) left Austin this morning at 8:54AM and landed in Birmingham at 10:19AM. The flight info that appears above is the RETURN flight discovered by BurntOrangeNation.

N41NW

So, apparently Colonel Mustard with the candleholder Kines didn't fly anywhere today, but Texas did pay a visit to Kines this morning to interview him for the Texas DC position, prior to the Alabama press conference.

Kines is a defensive coach whose style of coaching is passing quickly. He needs to do what he can. I think that he knows he is on short time at Alabama.

that is impossible the times of departure and arrival conflict with the time of the press conference unless he was a hologram

Not saying he's not going to coach at Texas, but Joe Kines was in a press conference in Tuscaloosa while that plane flew from Birmingham to Austin. A business partner of Paul Bryant, Jr., the Bear's son and the jet's owner, was on the jet going to attend a convention.

    Kev,
fly him due west over Ark then south next time, if at all possible. We wouldn't want him falling off the plane and landing anywhere near Baton Rouge.

Hmmm...you know boys, that was my initial take on the article too regarding the timeline. I have not seen the video from the presser to see if Kines was there (in person) or via phone.

And -- it is the internet -- so maybe this rumor is just that.

    I'll check it out.

Update posted on this - Texas went to see Kines, not vice versa. See above.

Then again, could just be a really smart Texas coach scooping some great recruits; While the rooster's away, the henhouse goes unguarded, so-to-speak.

    to bamaboy,
it doesnt matter if kines is an alabama man or not. when a new coach comes in, he chooses who stays and who goes. the school gets no say so what so ever. if the new coach wants him, he might stay, but if he has another DC in mind, then kines will be gone.

I'm from Alabama, and let me tell you:

If you can get Joe Kines, GET HIM. He isn't going out of style, he is very well-versed. Alabama has had a great defense for years, and last year during the 10-2 season we were ranked 3rd overall and 1st in many categories. He's the man, he'll be outstanding with the talent in Texas.

And despite what Bamaboy may think, with Mike Shula will go his coaching staff. I don't think we're gonna keep Joe Kines. If he's looking at Texas, then Texas should be looking at him.

    I say this without bias.
    (almost)

Roll Tide. (hook'em horns... every now and then.)

Joe Kines will never be fired and right now hes the head guy at bama. personally i think we should give this guy a raise to make sure he goes nowhere else. Our defense will always be top notch as long as hes here. Texas i think youve got about as much a chance with Kines as we do with Spurrier.

    bleed crimson:
kines has been great at bama and pretty much all bama fans want him to stay. but the fact of the matter is, no matter what the school offers him or how bad they want him, the new coach will have the final word, the only word in this case, of what coaches stay and go. thats part of coaching. each coach picks his own staff and he does this b/c at the end of the day he is responsible for the entire team. no coach would even begin to consider going to any school unless they could completely hire their own staff. if the new coach wants kines, then kines stays (if kines chooses to do so). if the new coach doesnt want kines, then there is nothing anyone on earth can do to keep kines there.

dawgfan: no coach with a human brain would fire Joe Kines, arguably the best DC in college football.

I never said the coach would fire him. My point is the new coach is the one who makes that decision, not the school.
