Longhorns to wear bluebonnet decals
To honor the Johnson family following the recent death of former first lady Claudia "Lady Bird" Johnson, the University of Texas football team will wear bluebonnet decals on their helmets this year.
The Johnsons were noted fans of the program, and support of the idea was given by the full team."Coach Royal has talked to me about countless stories where he and President Johnson sat and talked about our team and our quarterbacks and all that it meant," Brown added. "[Equipment manager] Chip Robertson came up with it, obviously the influence that the First Lady had with wildflowers all across the country, so we thought it was a great idea. Obviously the President was very involved with civil rights back in the '60s. It was something that George Wynn presented to our team [Sunday] night, and our team was 100 percent unanimous that the Johnsons should have a place on the helmets."
The bluebonnet is the official flower of the State of Texas and it was Lady Bird Johnson who helped begin the tradition of seeding bluebonnets along Texas highways.
Lady Bird Johnson attended the University of Texas in the 1930s, graduating with honors in 1933.

I'm truly sorry for the loss of the Johnson and Taylor family but can the city of Austin please take the veil off and come out of mourning. We had memorials for a week, we renamed a local lake after her, now players will sport a bluebonnet on their helmets. I'm not trying to be a cynic but I'm just ready to move on. I may be to young but I've listened and read all the things that Lady Bird did and I'm just not that moved by it all, like I said could be my age. I think the things she did was good but nothing that really impacted America. I apologize if I offend anyone.

K-State vs Texas in a couple of weeks will be fun. I'm sure both teams will be ready to throw down. I doubt we'll see a Texas drives end with a quarterback sneaks on the goal line though.

HaHaHa comment 8. TX looked horrible. Some good plays though. The way a team learns and changes after game one can be a great barameter of how the team is going to do the rest of the season. TCU should be a good game next week. If TX plays the same, they will get killed. If they improve, and play well, they could look pretty good this season. Still predicting at least 3 losses for TX this season. TCU willl be their game to "prove" themselves.

Well played Sallie, TX did indeed look horrible. TCU will be a good game because they have a great defense, but their offense is bad...really bad and they lost their running back. Sallie I hope your right about three games. Right now I don't think we can beat ou, aTm, and neb. and K-state will be tough they gave Auburn all they could handle. Okl. State will be tough too. So I hope your right. We need to make some serious changes. Thankfully we play UCF after TCU so we can settle down some more and adjust to the changes I pray the coaches will make. I did really well in history and government in high school and college, and I can't recall one really significant thing she did. Maybe my comments have not been direct enough. I am not a OU fan! I am an Aggie. But I am realistic, and don't predict A&M winning every game they play. A&M has a much better team than last year, but a very tough schedule. Some big upsets will have to come our way to win big 12 south (it should belong to ou). Fun to make fun of tx, but A&M was not impressive either. As a whole, the big 12 has to step up. K-state looked great, but did not finish. They should have won the game, but could not finish the game. Kudos K-State. Experience (coaching and players) will allow you to finish.

Hey Sallie...The season is earlier! USC & texas did not look impressive in their wins but they should play better. OU, Florida, LSU, Louisville, and West Virginia looked SUPERB in their wins BUT their schedules are going to get tougher. Hey teams can get injuries that can turn their season around. I saw OU game against UNT. If any of OU linebackers or safeties get injuried...OU is not going to be a National Title Contender, PERIOD. Their second string defense needs to improve just in case! Hey Sallie...I can tell you there are fickle fans everywhere. I was stationed in Long Beach, California in 01/89 - 11/89. I used to hangout in the Los Angeles area. I did not see anyone wearing USC, UCLA, or Los Angeles Laker gear. Why? Cause those teams were terrible. I did see a lot of it the night of the UCLA/USC game! Hey that's their choice not mine. I wore my Dallas Cowboys gear and they went 1 -15 that year. I wore my OU gear when they were on probation and getting stomp by teams like: Northwestern, California, and Big 8/12 opponents. I was here when ut was average and had a losing season. Now that ut has won a National Title fans are coming out of the closet. Yes, I think the big 12 missed the boat by leaving out TCU. However, that is in the current state of football programs. I would also like to see some realignment with the north teams. I would like to see Arkansas in the big 12 mix.

Hey I need an Aggie to back me up in here! As a fan from Texas (the state not the school) and the Big 12, I actually prefer to see tu over OU. But lets face it, TX looked embarassing. ATM's score looked better than the actual game and stats. ATM's performance was not impressive at all. The only big 12 south school to take care of business was OU. I had three calls from tu friends today that were worried about the last regular season game this year. Don't fret yet. First game of the season.
Big 12 south is supposed to be great historically. OU aside, we were not impressive Saturday. The real test will be miami at OU (lucky its a home game), TCU and TX, and ATM at miami. I think that after these games we will know where our respective teams stand for the rest of the season.

Ranting I am not. I have lived in Austin since 1995 but since 1993 all I hear is that texas has more "college" or "NFL" because of the "size". I used all the "ranting" to say we all have different opinions. If I not mistaken ESPN had a thing on their College Gameday stating most players in the NFL comes from the state of Florida! And my take on "stealing" players from texas. Believe it or not but all high football players do not all want to go to texas or texas schools. If texas loses recruits it is usually because education or football wise maybe texas or texas colleges don't have what they looking for. I don't steal.

Lennie, they could all be wearing toe shoes and tutus for all I care. As long as they are playing smash mouth, disciplined football. I think they will show up and win...not by much, but they will win. I'm almost more interested in the ou and Miami game to be honest with you. I want to get a better idea on where ou is at.

Don't worry Lennie I'm still here, I've just been busy. Despite what you were saying I am will to admit to it when Texas does poorly, IF IT IS A LOSS. As to the ut- tcu game, don't you think texas's first game showed them that they won't just win by showin up? And your supposed facts are wrong, Darrell Royal was hired by ut in 1956, not the '70s. I figured that most people should figure out that he had to be hired before 1963 because that's when he won his first national championship at ut. Hook 'em horns.

Also, I ain't Longhorn, I just thought that the picture was funny. It's like how some people make fun of Mack Brown because he cries before every game, but he has a very good reason. He lost his grandmother, his father, 11 tamu players and an alumnus, an old high school teammate and friend, and one of his own players, all in five years. You might wonder why he cared so much about the tamu players, but he knew most of them personally. He cries because he doesn't want to forget any of those people so makes time to think of all of them before a game. Some people would say he's weak for crying, but it makes him stronger. In remembering them, he remembers what they taught him, and can learn from their mistakes. If you think that's funny go ahead and laugh, but you can't deny the man can coach.

Hey Bevo Boy I don't understand the question but I can tell if OU wins they win and they lose they lose. I been on the blogs for probably a month. All the comments I read ut fans make about OU fans and football I can see it here in ut and Austin. I moved here to Austin and the first thing people told me is "Football is Religion here". I don't know about you but people turn to religion for a better understanding of life. I can tell you right here so make a note of it that if OU loses that is a reflection on the team and coaching staff. When OU or a fan of OU in this case does something IT IS AMAZING how some of these people are quick to judge. I am almost sure that most of them never been to OKLAHOMA. I noticed and maybe it's me that Kevin does not post negative press about ut. I am POSITIVE if he did ut fans let alone texans will be doing the exact same thing. As far as the TCU and ut game...I hope and pray to the LORD above they play their best. If TCU wins then there will be no excuses. I have been here in Austin since 1993 and every time texas lose there are EXCUSES. Even when Ohio State beat them last year all I heard was Cult McCoy is a freshman...too much pressure. But the same sports announcers were stating how great he was weeks before the game. I am like this now...this is getting silly. I am not here to show you or anyone that OU is this or that. I have come with facts and all I hear is opinions or name calling. I still think ut will lose to TCU and if they don't then that is cool because they will be undefeated when they face OU and if OU wins they will not admit OU was better it will be excuses, PERIOD!

Hey Bevo Boy I am not questioning Whack Brown or even you as a person. I think you are a little over zealous in a bad way when it comes to ut football. I don't have anything against anyone on this blog including you. I can look GOD in the face in say it in TRUTH. But I will strike back when insulted. If I am wrong I will apologize but I will defend myself. If you were in front of me I will say the same things but I will never and have never put my hands on anyone when it cames to sports. It should not even have to come to that. I am having one of my friends, Michael, over tommorrow to watch the TCU and ut game and he is a diehard ut fan BUT he is also one of my CLOSE friends. We know that our friendship is more important than these football games. So that where I stand and I am sticking to my predictions. BE COOL and remember this is only entertainment.

Believe or not, I do have a close friend who likes ou. We aren't as close as we once were, but that has nothing to do with football. He would give me a hard time from 2000-2004 and I've given him a hard time the last two years. I know it's just entertainment, but what is the point of watching if you don't care about it? I didn't make excuses when Texas lost those five games in a row, but I couldn't hear the end of it when Oregon got both of those two bad calls (yes, i admit they were bad calls). I just think that even if it was an away game, if they were the better team it shouldn't've come to bad calls deciding the game. You can make a similar argument about what happened to ark. st. against ut (i finally found a good review of the game), but the fact is that they had other chances to shut out the game when they had the lead, and failed. I know not every fan is like that, but fans of every team will make excuses as will players on every team. Don't try to make it sound like it only happens at ut.

Bevo Boy you still have not read all my comments. It is fact not my opinion when ut loses I have never heard Whack Brown admit the the winning team was just better. Last year after the Ohio State game he even said the pressure was too much for Cult McCoy. Was the pressure too much the week before? When they lost to Kansas State and Texas A&M it was injuries. When OU lose I have always heard OU coach say it's on me! We were outplayed, outhustled, and outcoached. The media hype him up after that Oregon lost and he scheduled a news conference and stated we were up by 13 we should not have let it come down to that. It was strange after he made the statement it was not mentioned no more. I watch it cause it is entertainment. I have friends that will back me on this. OU lose life goes on for me. You can enjoy the game with insults and violence. If it was announced OU would never play another football game oh well life goes on for me. If it was mention ut will never play football would you respond that way? So all you ut fans read this...OU went through a lot last year. If the same happened to ut most would make excuses if they would have lost. OU still overcame and was crowned Big 12 CHAMPIONS! Come with facts on that!

Lennie, read comment #68 carefully. Then answer this: Where in that comment do I say that coaches on every team make the excuses? I said that players and fans make excuses, but OU most have done enough complaining anyway if you're right in saying that Bob Stoops put the blame on himself because the refs for that came were still suspended and received death threats from OU fans. Some coaches make excuses and others won't, but ALL of them still think of the excuses. Those who don't say anything just feel that the media will blow it out of proportion if they do.

The fact of the matter is that if TCU is 12-0 in December, and there is only 1 (or no) other unbeaten team, they better get the National Title game they deserve. The crap that happened to Boise State last year is for the birds. Congratulations to the Broncos, the real, undefeated 2006-07 national champions. Florida deserved a shot at Ohio State like Nebraska deserved to play Miami in 2001-02.

Lennie, the only reason I insult you is because when I state my opinion you just say, "No, that's crap, ut is held to a different standard than ou." As to what you said in comment 68 Lennie, OU did NOT win the big 12 last year, Texas lost it. When Colt McCoy got hurt last year Mack Brown made the entire team pay the price for only playing Jevon Snead two series before that. The FACT is that OU didn't play their way into the BCS, ut just played out of it. I know Mack Brown was listening to the statement "if you have two qbs, you have zero qbs," but he even put the blame on himself for not getting Jevon more experience when they looked to him to play qb. Mack did not make excuses. He said it was a clean hit that ended up hurting Colt. Let me repeat that for you Lennie, MACK DID NOT MAKE EXCUSES.

By the way, Lennie, did you watch the tcu vs. ut game? Yes, the ut offense game out flat but they were dominant in the second half against tcu, which has been the best run defenses in all of college football the past couple years (going 21 straight games without allowing a 100 yard rusher, that is, until they met Jamaal Charles). They defense also just allowed 60.9 yards per game against the run. They were also good against the pass last year, though not dominant like they were against the run. McCoy showed that he hadn't lost his touch throwing the football, either, especially with that 33-yard touchdown pass to Nate Jones and throwing for 239 yards overall. Those two picks showed he's still got some things to work on, but he settled down in the second half and led several long drives. You said you wanted facts, how's that?

First of all, who calls the Big 12 OU and the 11 dwarfs when three other teams are ranked in the top 25? But let's get on to the OU game. I only watched the first half, and I know that they played a lot better in the second half, but how can a defense that is supposed to be top of the Big 12 give miami 2 new sets of downs when they would've had to kick a fg? I thought that the second pass interference was questionable, but they still shouldn't've committed the first one. Those penalties led to the only miami td, and from what I saw ou looked solid other than that drive. I know the rushing statistics weren't great, but I believe that a big part of that was a botched snap to the punter that started miami in the ou redzone (though the d did well to hold 'em to a fg). It seemed like it was just a couple a bad plays that let miami score at all because they had to have help to get into the endzone on their one good drive. It's lookin like it should be quite a game in Dallas this year.

With Arkansas, it doesn't really matter how they do in SEC play, all of the critics seem to believe that a 5-3 conference record in the SEC is the same as an 8-0 record anywhere else. I didn't think it would happen again this year, but I'd say that UT overlooked UCF even after they beat 'bama. Since they barely escaped over Ark. St. I thought that they would make sure that they were prepared for everybody, but if UT keeps thinkin too much of themselves or too little of others, they could be in for a long season.
