Meet the Press: Media consensus says A&M will can Fran

With Texas A&M admonishing head football coach Dennis Franchione yesterday for his insider email newsletter, the writers have reached a pretty firm consensus that the Aggies will fire Fran at the end of the season.

Jenn Floyd Engel (when did she get married?) says that Fran will get fired, but it's not a result of the emails - rather the on the field product. If the Aggies were undefeated, we wouldn't be having this conversation.

Buck Harvey in San Antonio says that A&M AD Bill Byrne is now in the catbird seat - he can fire Fran and never worry about paying the contract buyout.

Now Byrne can sit back and watch. If Franchione becomes what A&M always wanted him to be, then Byrne can enjoy the success. The letter of admonishment will be nothing more than a signal of when the momentum turned.

But if Franchione doesn't? If Franchione loses badly?

Then the secret newsletter becomes Byrne's leverage. A&M lawyers will meet with Franchione's, arguing whether the contract was breached, and this $1,200 newsletter could be worth millions in buyout costs to A&M.

Kevin Sherrington of the Dallas Morning News says it's clear that Fran will be fired because A&M has stopped defending him.

For the first time since Dennis Franchione's private "VIP Connection" went public two weeks ago, no one from Texas A&M came to the coach's defense Thursday.

Not his players.

Not his boss.

Not a soul.

Kevin Scarbinsky of the Birmingham News says 'not so fast, my friend' to talk of Auburn's Tommy Tuberville coaching at A&M rumors.

Houston blogger Tom Kirkendall runs down the list of A&M coaches through the years and asks why can't the Aggies ever seem fire a football coach correctly?

If Texas A&M beat Oklahoma, which is unlikely, and texas, which is likely, he will be around another year.

As Corso would say, "Not so fast my friend"!

The way I see it, the Aggies have a history of letting how they fare in the UT game distinguish between a good or bad season. By doing so, the admininstration sometimes turns a blind eye to what the real problems with the A&M football team may be. In this particular case I might have agreed with you early on, but this time it looks like the Aggies are going to approach this differently than they might have in the past. Allthough, I don't think any of Fran's involvement with his internet insider email has that much to do with the successes or failures of this years team, I do think it gives A&M an easy out as far as firing him.
Also, if Fran is able to beat OU or UT or both, then this might even make the job more appealing to another coach that might consider taking the job. Again, when the story first broke I couldn't see Fran losing his job if he were to beat one of the Big12 powers, but now I'm not so sure.

I don't care if we beat texas by 30 points. The damage is done.

If we finish strong it shouldn't hurt our new coach with his first recruiting class.

Coach Francione has a history of taking losing programs and turning them around.Texas A&M finished the 06 season 9-5 and three of these loses were due to poor coaching decisions and clock management. After the TTech, OU and Neb games last year the fans were hollering to fire the coach. Then Texas A&M beat Texas in Austin a truley amazing moment for Aggie fans who dream and fantisize about beating Texas their whole lives. There obsession with beating Texas is beyond fanantical and this one vicory helped keep the coaches job secure.
Today on T.V. I heard an announcer predict that Texas A&M would lose in Lubbock and that he got the imformation on a E-Mail.Thats really not funny and I really think that Texas A&M will win in Lubbock, despite being on the road in a hostile enviroment against an offensive powerhouse.
They can effectiveley run the ball against the TTech defense and control the time of possesion.
Grahmn Harrel will have difficulty passing the ball while laying on his back. The TTech O-Line will allow the A&M D to harrass the Raiders backfeild causing missques and INT's.

The J Trains guarantee to beat Texas Tech was not worth even one of Coach Frans e-mails. go figure

Tech whipped A&M i honestly cannot believe so many people did not see that coming.Maybe if J Train would keep his mouth shut maybe they would win a game. Everytime he opens his mouth and talks crap the Ag's lose ex: Miami, Tech. Why does beating Oklahoma and Texas save Fran's job? So what if you can beat OU and UT every blue moon can you win the Big 12? Can you make it to a BCS bowl game or national championship? Fran has had his time he has brought shame to Texas A&M and at any other school he would have already been fired.

    #10 You're right, it's all Jorvorskie's fault.

It's probably also his fault that Fran only gave him the ball a total of 15 times in those two losses (compared to an average of over 17 rushes per game in our 5 wins).

Hey AgRyan04 Your'e right I read about it in an E-Mail.Really when you look at it A&M has always had trouble with TTech, kinda like the Horns against K State.Look at the bright side the Aggies will get a new coach one with spirit and enthusiasm. A coach that has the balls to go for it on 4th and 1 instead of kicking field goals and lossing three games by less than 7 points combined.I have always been a Horns fan, but I pull for A&M in every game except for two.

Fran is done. The Aggie Alumni are sick and tired of an offense that has zero imagination, linebackers that take high school drops, a defense that should be called the REEKING CREW, and being embarrassed time after time. I love Texas A&M and I love our football program but enough is enough.

40 Acres of Burnt Orange...the way it looks now Texas A&M is going to lose to Oklahoma and texas. he is most likely gone. Texas A&M made Texas Tech defense look great.
