Sherman to be named Aggies head coach
The Dallas Morning News is reporting that Texas A&M is set to name Houston Texans offensive coordinator Mike Sherman as new head coach of the Aggies.
Sherman was the Aggies OL coach from 1989 to '93 before leaving to coach for one season at UCLA. He returned to College Station as OL coach from 1995 to 1996, before accepting a position with the Green Bay Packers.
Sherman became the head coach of the Packers in 2000 and led Green Bay from 2000-2004.
A&M has scheduled an 11am press conference to introduce Sherman.
Apparently Sherman has the blessing of Texans owner Bob McNair.
"First, let me say that we don't want to lose Mike because he's a terrific coach," McNair told the Chronicle. "But I think A&M could search for a long time and not find a better candidate than Mike Sherman."We would highly recommend Mike for the job, and we'd wish him the best."
Interestingly enough, it does not appear that the Aggies ever officially contacted Auburn head coach Tommy Tuberville. The Tigers coach told reporters that he had not been contacted and was looking forward to discussing an extension with AU.
With Sherman, the Aggies have an "insider" who will honor and respect the traditions at A&M. In the end, that was obviously a key consideration for those involved in the search. The boosters at A&M have always given as much consideration to how you win, so I can see where Sherman will make many Aggie alums very happy. Another key factor must have been that Sherman wanted to be the A&M coach. Badly.
The general concensus is that Sherman is a "teaching" coach and will be likely be able to develop players at A&M. He certainly did a good job recruiting on the OL during his previous stints in College Station. And will be able to sit down with recruits and give them the "I know what it takes to get you to the NFL" that has worked so very well for Pete Carroll and Southern Cal. I'm not suggesting that he is going to knock Mack Brown from his annual top-ten recruiting perch, but he certainly will give the Aggies some lift.

Update
It's official. According to the Dallas Morning News, Sherman signed a seven-year agreement worth $1.8 million a year.
"Howdy," Sherman said in a packed news conference at Hagner Auditorium."It is an honor and privilege to be introduced as the 28th coach at Texas A&M," he added. "Bill, Dr. Davis has entrusted me to help write the next chapters with the players and coaches who will be working with me."
...
Sherman said he started talking with Byrne late Friday after A&M defeated No. 13 Texas, 38-30. After that game, Franchione resigned his position upon completing a five-year tenure with a 32-28 record.
"The thing we kept hearing as we were doing our due diligence through the year, the person you need to take a look at is Mike Sherman," Byrne said. "Most of the all, the thing I like about Mike Sherman, he's an Aggie.
"Mike, welcome home."

Shermans reputation as an offensive coach should help aTm hold some of their recruits who are actively looking around. It will be interesting to see how he fills out the rest of the staff and when he gets fully engaged.

Now wait just a damn minute. Auburn really needs that buyout of Tuberville so they can afford to buy some more attack dogs like they had Saturday night--the ones who bite our own players rather than Alabama's.

Thank the Good Lord we didn't go after Tuberville. I knew we could get more for less, and we did.
I'll admit to being one of those Ags that thought he'd be in College Station. That's because I thought Byrne would choke. Tuberville was the "feel good" choice because 1) we knew he'd jump at the chance to coach a better program, and 2) he's a defensive guy (which is what everyone in Aggieland wants).
Cudos to Byrne for making the right choice!

See Army95, there you go with that "better program" stuff. Your boots must come up to your balls, son. I thought I straightened you out before.
Which statistical measure do you want me to use again? Oh wait. All you have is opinion. And that 2-0 series record against us. Wow!
And hey, you beat Texas, to put your record at 36-73-5. Contratulations! You're up to almost 34% of those games!
I noticed while looking up that last stat that ATM played the Texas School for the Deaf in 1904, and beat them 49-0. You've got a 1-0 lead in that series. Maybe your new coach can see about renewing it. You can play at Kyle Field. I guess the crowd noise won't be a distraction for them...

Army95Did you get kicked out of the army for smoking crack?
Tubbs never had any intention of leaving Auburn he just used your school for contract extension leverage. You need to wake up and realize your program is way way behind compared to just about any SEC program.

AgRyan: I'm unaware that we've played any schools for the deaf in our history. I'd like to say that we'd hang a hundred on them, but that would just be plain wrong.
I don't really have a problem with A+M, just with Army95 and his insolence in the presence of greatness. I had assumed that the COC would have taught him some respect. He probably got drummed out of the real Army for the same reason.
Here's something that I don't understand about ATM: your fight song calls out Texas way too much. I mean, it's practically dedicated to them. It's borderline creepy. It's a bit obsessive/compulsive at the least, wouldn't you say?
You're Texas A+M: The eyes of College Station/Bryan are upon you...

I think that if Leach ends up at Arkansas - you will have won this argument. But, man, that would be weird. I think McFadden would stay for his senior year if he could throw the thing 70 times a game. It's a lot less wear and tear on the ol' thigh pads.

Tommie: I think McFadden will be gone. He knows his future with playing on Sundays involves wearing out the old thigh pads, not wearing the rib protector. Wouldn't it be funny if he did try to throw it that much, and take off running, too?
With Auburn, I'm thinking maybe they got played. Isn't it strange that after all these rumours about Tubs to ATM that it doesn't even look like they ever had any intentions to give him a look? Maybe he still has some friends in College Station who got a little smoke going for him and paved the way for a nice little raise for him and the crew? Hmmm...
I'm no conspiracy theorist, but you do wonder why you find no fire after all that smoke...

OU-Ron,
Yeh that's a pretty embarrassing loss, but I really can't recall (in my lifetime), ever losing to any WAC team - and we've played many of them. The most excitement that the 2004 season saw (up until Texas), was when the Fresno State Bulldogs, only lost by 12. Man, that proved to the whole country that there might be hope.
