Tech signee arrested for shoplifting at Wal-Mart

Texas Tech signee Edward Britton was arrested last week after shoplifting two mp3 players from Wal-Mart. Britton, a two-time 2,000-yard rusher at El Paso Montwood, was arrested after police found the players in his possession.

A quick check of the Wal-Mart website doesn't show any $157 mp3 players, as the El Paso Times reports, but it's likely that Britton was busted with two 1GB Creative MuVo players, which Walmart.com shows as $158.62.

The Red Raiders signee was charged with theft over $50 and under $500 and booked into jail. The theft is a Class B misdemeanor punishable by up to 180 days in the county jail and a fine up to $2,000.

Britton declined to comment to the El Paso Times, but his father said it 'could be worse':

"It speaks for itself," Britton Sr. told the Times. "But if you look at today's landscape - the kids today and the trouble they're getting into - it's unfortunate, but you always have to look at the bright side. It could be worse. ... My son doesn't go out and drink. He doesn't have a record. In school, he was never suspended for fighting, was never truant, so this definitely was a shock."

Tech coach Mike Leach, who signed Britton in February, said Monday that he was unaware of his arrest and declined to comment as to whether Britton's scholarship would be in jeopardy.

Leach was not asked if he now questions Britton's 4.5 forty time after being caught by El Paso's finest.
