UAB swipes Callaway from Georgia
UAB is expected to introduce Neil Calloway, offensive coordinator at Georgia, as the new Head Coach of the Blazers at a press conference today. Calloway will stay on through UGa's bowl game & coach the O-Line for the Bulldogs.
Callaway replaces Watson Brown, who resigned last week to become coach at Division I-AA Tennessee Tech. Brown, the brother of Texas football coach Mack Brown, had a 62-75 record in 12 seasons as UAB's coach. The Blazers finished 3-9, 2-6 in Conference USA this season. The Blazers chose Callaway after interviewing South Carolina defensive coordinator Tyrone Nix and Mississippi State offensive coordinator Woody McCorvey. UAB scheduled an interview with LSU offensive coordinator Jimbo Fisher, but the meeting was cancelled because the school's board of trustees had concerns that Fisher would be too expensive to hire.

Congratulations to coach Callaway. If he schedules soft and puts together a few 9-10 win seasons, he will be in line for a big time job by 2010. The way things are going in college football, all you need to do is post a few 10 win seasons and some big school will give you $2 mil a year. Good for him.

Okay now I'm real confused...
Richt gave up play calling duties to Bobo but yet had Callaway as an OC all this time...
Guess that goes to show how much confidence Richt had in Callaway...
So is this really such a good hire for UAB?

He was the OC at Georgia but he never called plays. Richt was the primary playcaller. I think OC was just a fancier name for being an offensive assistant.
Regardless UGA will miss him because he was a good OL coach and a fine recruiter.
