Mack Brown votes USC #1 in Coaches Poll
Who's the #1 team in the country, Mack Brown? Apparently the Texas football coach thinks it's not his team - since he voted USC #1.
So, who does think Texas is #1? Colorado's Gary Barnett, Oklahoma State's Mike Gundy, Iowa State's Dan McCarney, San Jose State's Dick Tomey, TCU's Gary Patterson and Florida State coach Bobby Bowden.

He's not stupid. Of course he thinks his team is number one. If he voted for Texas as number one it would just be motivation for USC. He is definately thinking everything out on this one. If he would have done the opposite the media would have ran with it. Duh!

This guy just rubs me so wrong. Ever since last year when he whined his way into the Rose Bowl. He didn't belong there. I understand the money thing though. And now, this. What is the point in voting for USC as the #1 team - when you're team is right there? That would seem to be ridiculous. Here is my spin. The guy would never want to look like a complete fool - even at the expense of his own team. When the dust settles, and he's on the wrong end of a 53-14 massacre, he wants to be able to say that he understood that his team had not really made it to that plateau quite yet. If he had his team #1 - then it would appear that he did not have a real complete assessment of his own teams weaknesses. But, he knows that Pete Carroll is going to figure that one out. He also knows - that he cannot find a single weakness (that he could exploit) in USC. Therefore, he knows that he is going to get hammered. He does not want to appear to be ignorant in front of the whole country, his own administration, and possibly he has a girlfriend on the side (I don't know). Truth is: you don't want to be caught nappin' like Bob Stoops was. I mean Carroll just made that guy look like he was retarted or something. So, the guy comes off looking like he might know something about talent - which I have no doubt that he might.
What I can't dig - is how he could give his own team the impression that they were not the very best team in the whole land and better never forget that. If your own coach can't have faith in you - then how can the team as a whole have any faith that they can pull this off. Do you think it ever crosses the Trojans minds that they could really ever lose? Do you think that their coach ever tells them that there just could be someone better than they are? I don't think that is how it works at USC right now. The deal is: nobody can beat you if you go out there and do what you are trained to do, period! And, that is a fact for just about any good team. If they play a perfect game - they can beat anybody. The mindset that you are the underdog in this kind of game - is probably not a good idea. Here is why I say this: Notre Dame and Fresno State were able to watch reruns of "Rudy" for a week leading up to their respective games against Troy. And, it worked because they really were that much inferior. Heck, USC had hammered Notre Dame by 31 for three straight years. SC couldn't have cared less about Notre Dame on that day. But, Notre Dame was "Rudy" for that day and almost pulled off the great upset. Pat Hill's program at Fresno has built up for these "Big Games" for years. They live to try and beat the BCS teams. The strange phenomenom for them: they have a total emotional meltdown and always lose about three league games to crappy teams immediately following one of the "Big Games" against the BCS teams. What is going to work against Texas: is that Texas was supposed to be the big bad unstopable powerhouse all year long. They played that role to perfection all year long with quite some authority. Now, the coach is asking his players to role over like a submissive pup, and be subservient to USC. What a joke! What is he saying? Maybe, "If you don't act too cocky maybe they won't beat the hell out of you too hard". That is a mistake. USC is going to try and beat the crap out of you no matter how you want to act. We are trying to recruit players that might want to go to Texas, and if they don't want to be embarassed, maybe they just ought to come on over to USC. This is the one game where the Trojans are going to really pour it on. If you make the mistake of letting your players think that they can't fight back - you will get killed. I actually liked what DT Rodney Wright of Texas had to say, "We are going to dominate USC's offensive line". Although the guy is a complete idiot (as he is gonna have more weight pressing down on him than Wile E. Coyote ever experienced) - I do like his bravado. I think the whole team better step out onto that field ready to die than ever be beaten down. That is the only way that they can stay in that game. They have to refuse to lose! And, that can only happen when you know that you are the best and could not suffer the humiliation of ever being wrong about that! That why USC will hammer these guys 53-14! Trust me. It's all the wrong psychology for this game.Tommie Trojan

Remind me never to buy any self-motivational books authored by Mack Brown. I am all for modesty and being humble, but that is ridiculous.
What kind of locker room speech does this guy give? Why would you as a player want to put your trust in him and have him lead you into battle? No wonder people in Texas believe they win despite Mack Brown simply because their talent level is so much better than the people they generally play.

I think it showed a bit of class, not the norm with Mack, nor Texas. You look at Barnett, whos days are numbered at CU. He picked his team in the top 25, I think he picked them 21, 100 - 6 in the last 2 games. Now that's a class act for ya.

Geez, somebody needs to get Tommie's prescription refilled. That's the longest post I've ever seen. You're giving both coaches way too much credit for giving a hoot about the polls. They are in the big game and none of the rest of it matters to either of them. BTW Where do I go to put something down on your 39 point spread? It's four times what the real books are offering so I'm sure you'll have lots of takers.

i dont believe Mack at all! and i dont think mack believes himslef either! Mack knows his team is ganna slaughter USC but at least 14 points, he is just trying to get people and recruits to see him as the "NICE-GUY" o ya i dont have a "BIG HEAD" even tho he knos his teams is way better then USC and should be ranked #1.

Hey Tommie! You can keep making excuses for USC, but there will be no excuses when they lose to Texas in the Rose Bowl. Notre Dame beat USC, they didn't almost win. If not for a bad spot, and a push by Reggie Bush, USC would be in the Fiesta Bowl instead and Notre Dame might be playing for the National Title. Anyway, Vince Young is going to go around, through and over the USC defense on his way to a National Championship.

Tommie & Neville... I attended the University of Texas Hall of Honor induction ceremony last month and got to rub elbows with some former athletes and coaches from UT. Mack Brown showed up unannounced to address the ballroom during the ceremonies and give his best to the new inductees. One of the gentlmen sitting next to me (a former coach) leaned over to me and said, " I hope he wins the National Championship, it's the only way he's ever going to get my respect." I'm not a big UT fan but I respect all programs and their traditions. I just thought it odd that he hasn't even sold the UT alum on his ability. I'll be the first to admit he's a great recruiter, but he's made more coaching blunders than wise decisions in his tenure at UT. So I agree with you guys and the UT alumn, he ain't sold me either.

I'd have to agree with Mack also. The Trojans are practicly going to demolish the Longhorns with their offense in the National Championship game on Jan 4. Although I do have to hand it to Texas this year they do have a great offense also but their coach isn't stupid at all for voting USC #1.

I think all of you are over rating USC's offense. that crap might work on nobody teams like they usually play, but not against texas. I would also like to get a piece of that point spread Tommie T. Let me know if you want to bet on your prediction. Because I could use the extra cash off of a dumbass! Go Dawgs!!!!!

jrock919..Ever heard the phrase "It's better to be thought a fool than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt". AT this point, anyone who really doubts SC's credibility at thi point defines the term "dumbass". Ask OU how overrated SC's offense is..It's the same group of guys, one year progressed.
Gonna be a great game!PACMan said:

First off USC is not playing a weak ass team like fresno st.(which they almost lost), arizona, hawaii, or arkansas. Texas has this thing called a top 10 defense, something the Trogans have'nt played in 3 years. The PAC 10 is garbage. I mean #6 Oregon lost to Oklahoma. You guys will see come Jan 4...one word Vince-sanity!
