USC bending rules for suspended QB?

USC backup QB Mark Sanchez was placed on "interim suspension" by the USC Student Affairs Office in the wake of his arrest on sexual assault charges last week.

Because of the suspension, which banned Sanchez from attending class & all university related functions, it was feared that Sanchez might lose his eligibility because he must miss final exams.

However, the LA Daily News reported today that Sanchez was being allowed to take his final exams this semester, just as his case was being referred to the LA County DA's office.

Preferential treatment for an athlete?

Its pretty obvious to me that this is preferential treatment, if any other student had been involved in something like this, USC wouldn't have thought twice about burying him.

if someone was trying to make him ineligible then does it really matter? any other student doesnt have to deal with the celebrity as well as the bad press given to some athletes. its not like the girl was actually examined by a doctor... sounds pretty fishy to me. besides, unless you actually know the person, its not like youre in any place to judge. and what EXACTLY constitutes sexual assault? and unwanted hug? leaning in for a kiss while drunk?

"Its pretty obvious to me that this is preferential treatment, if any other student had been involved in something like this, USC wouldn't have thought twice about burying him."

And even as a private institution faced a massive lawsuit.

I just graduated there in '05 and I've known students arrested by DPS and handed over to LAPD who faced felony charges (albeit not sexual assault) who weren't even suspended from school. There is no story here.

Bullcrap, he hasn't been charged with anything. There is no reason to suggest preferential treatment, just yet at least. How can you not let a kid take his final exams because 3 days before classes ended, he was arrested for suspicion of assault? SUSPICION! It could have happened to you or me, and believe me when I say that I would do everything in my power to get my $40,000 a year education, which includes taking final exams. If this had happened across any other campus or any sports team, surely he/she would post bail and then wait for a court hearing. In the meantime, let the kid take his exams, then postpone judgment until you find out the real facts.

I don't know what you call it, but when a student is placed on "interim suspension" by Student Affairs, they are basically kicked off campus. For whatever reason, Sanchez gets to stay current in classes and take final exams.

No, he wasn't allowed to keep going to classes, just take final exams.

One B!#ch makes an accusation and "innocent until proven guilty" goes out the window... nice.

Back in college I missed school from Military obligations (USMCr) and exceptions were made... its not out of the question to make exceptions now and then.

But again, if, If, IF! he's found to be guilty (depending on the offense) the guy should be put in jail.

I really don't think anything wrong was done here. I simply cannot believe that a program that is under the microscope this severe already would try to pull something like this right now.

It seems more likely to be part of a witch hunt...IMHO.

"Speaking of the LA County DA and USC football make sure you all read this link."

Bruinsnation trashing USC football for being thugs? Unheard of. Well, that is unbiased enough for me to buy it. Argument settled...we should arrest the entire football team, who knows how many unsolved crimes we'll clear from the books.

If Texas repeats next year, Jamaal Charles is going to be looking at 10 to 20 I bet. It is terribly sad the undue scrutiny which is given to those at the top, with the intention of bringing them down.

True, if USC runs a tight ship and has no dirt to be found then all the naysayers will have nothing. However, we all know or should know (if we're not too naive) that the percentage of NCAA violations actually discovered is small compared to the total committed.

Nothing is ever cut and dry, it is certainly reasonable to say that Pete's laid back attitude contributed to this level of scandal and lack of oversight. However, what must be admitted is that successful programs face an undue burden being under the limelight. What I'm saying is this stuff happens elsewhere. The proper way to look at it isn't that USC turned a blind eye to violations and that attitude gave then an advantage and helped them win. The proper way to look at it is that USC ran a successful program, had a number of transgressions like SO MANY OTHER SCHOOLS, except the heighten interest in them caused their violations to actually come to light. Well, not Mark's arrest...that is news anywhere. But even with the sexual assault, no one would be accusing special treatment if this was the backup quarterback for Boise St. No one would be giving it a second look.

It is just unfortunate and coincidental that all these scandals seemed to converege on this one point in time.

Also, I reiterate that from personal experience with USC students arrested for felonies (spitting on a police officer and taking a swing at him) who have not been suspended, that Mark isn't getting special treatment. Indeed, it is certainly questionable depending on the evidence faced and nature of the crime (injuries to accused, etc.) whether if he was a normal student that he'd even be suspended before an indictment or other actions.

So even if he was suspended, that in and of itself MAY be more than would've happened to a normal student. Taking his finals certainly isn't special treatment.

Mark- Not to burst your bubble.... but the USC Athletic Director actually "limited the amount of away team tickets" to the home husker game in '06, because the AD knew this as well... i'm sure there will be alot of red because the AD has already limited tickets (happened more than a month ago) i'm just wondering how many huskers can sneek in with home tickets and husker shirts underneath?!?

Alabama dynasty = probation that kept 'em down for 5 seasons (injuries added the extra 1 year).

USC has now turned into a dynasty and look whats happening to them...i never thought id say this but i feel bad for USC cuz i know how it feels to be screwed by the NCAA.

    kinda makes you say hmmmmmm......

isnt it funny that just about every college dynasty ends with probation. why is that?? because in college sports, the only way to end a dynasty is to put it under sanctions. unlike the NFL where the worst team gets the best recruits (thats why there isnt such a thing as a dynasty in the NFL) the exact opposite is true in the NCAA (best teams get the best recruits). so whats keeping USC from winning for the next 100 years straight......SANCTIONS. if you look back at a previous blog i predicted this would happen to USC if any of yall remember.

    To defensive minded nebraskan:

You think the staff in South Bend allotted NU any more than the customery 4,000 - 5,000 tickets usually given to an away opponent? You think they've got that many single game tickets for sale anyway.

From everything I've heard...and all the people who I know already have secured tickets, there will be between 35,000-40,000 rooting for NU this Sept. in the Coluseum.

    Boys. Boys, Boys,
listen up, Mark Sanchez is innocent, trust me, too many witnesses at the apartment, and way too much alcohol was her factor, some girl gets pissed because an up and coming football star dissed her, she is cryin wolf. watch this fall you will see, he will beat Booty out and get USC back to where they belong...again. THANK GOD FOR THE LAPD AND THE LA DISTRICT ATTORNEYS OFFICE!!!

and Nebraska, yeah Fresno State thought the same thing when they brought their thousand strong to Socal to make every attempt to beat the Trojans, granted they ALMOST did...but ALMOST does not cut it. I am sure Nebraska will show up with their blood red flowin proud, but you know the midwest boys can't handle the heat, come to Cali boys and get some, cause the blackshirts will never be a factor in this game. See ya in SEPTEMBER.

there's a difference between 1000 and let's say 20000. There is also a difference between Fresno State and Nebraska. As for whatever qb is playing, remember the name Adam Carricker and all of our lb's cuz you'll be seeing them a lot

    borNred,
your point was well taken, we'll see when ya come to Socal in September, but i think there is a solution to the Blackshirt LB's...Ryan Kalil, Jeff Byers, Sam Baker, and Chilo Rachal. I am sure we'll see what happens next, See ya in september, hell i'd even buy ya beer, win or lose!!!!

boreDred, what has happened to Nebraska when theyve faced a dynamic passing offense in recent years?
Though inexperienced, either one of these QBs, Sanchez or Booty, are talented enough to get the ball to (arguably) the Best WR/TE corps in the country. Who has Nebraska's D faced close to the likes of Dwayne Jarrett, Steve Smith, Fred Davis, etc.
