USC to play home games in the Rose Bowl?

The Wizard of Odds details an evolving plan for USC to move its home games from the LA Coliseum to the Rose Bowl in Pasedena beginning with the 2008 season.

USC approached the Rose Bowl because officials have grown frustrated with the lack of progress on a lease agreement to remain in the L.A. Coliseum, which first played host to a Trojan home game in 1922. USC's potential move has the blessing of rival UCLA, which is the primary tenant of the Pasadena venue.

The LA Times details USC's efforts to push through improvements at the Coliseum, including a $100 million renovation that would be paid by the university. Coliseum officials have balked at the plan because it would give USC control over the venue.

The Trojans have played their home games in the Coliseum since 1922, but suddenly face the prospect that this weekend's rivalry game with UCLA may be their last in the famed stadium.

The Coliseum people are moronic. They lost the Rams and they are doing their best to lose the Trojans. How stupid is that? USC fell right into their hands lately. They pull in way more dough than the Rams ever could.
I think that the Trojans would like to keep the stadium (during a renovation) to a more "Coliseum or traditional" style. USC wants to maintain tradition. It's everything at USC. The Coliseum people think that might land another Pro team some day and want a "more modern" look. I would give Southern Cal their way. There isn't gonna be any pro team that would ever want to play in the Coliseum again. The Raiders couldn't get any decent upgrades either. So far, the Coliseum commision has run out the Rams, UCLA and the Raiders. Personally, I don't care for losing the "tradition" of the Coliseum.
Here's the bad news for all you sports fans out there: the Rose Bowl holds about 105,000 screamin' fans and they can only get about 92,000 or so into the Coliseum. This means that if USC is serious about making the move - then it is about getting that extra money. It also means that Pete will be signed to a long-term contract worth mega-millions in order for this deal to go through. Sorry to have to break it to you like this. But remember: ALWAYS ALWAYS follow the money!

Tommy T. enlighten me on "the Coliseum people." Is that stadium owned by the city of Los Angles or is it a trust or privately owned? Seems like a program as highly respected as USC should have its own facility?

The Coliseum is not owned by the City - I do not believe. I would not swear to this though. It is managed by a group known as "the Coliseum Commission". I do know, as with everything else, the City is involved and wants "their cut" (parking, concessions, anything they can get their "greedy little hands" on, etc. The Commission has always been "not willing" to put up any money to make improvments. This leads me to think it was more privately owned. The "City" has been trying to bring back an NFL team for years. The Commission has been the problem. There is only three major football stadiums in the Los Angeles area (the Coliseum, Rose Bowl and Anaheim Stadium). Anaheim Stadium only holds about 60,000 max. That is out of the question. So, the commission always figures that they have an upper hand. Al Davis has had to call their bluff, Georgia Frontiere did and UCLA did also. Now, maybe USC will have to do the same. The "commission" is a real stupid and greedy organization - bottom line.

The stadium is owned by the State of California. The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum Commission is currently leasing and managing the stadium.
Since the Coliseum was made a National Historical Landmark in 1984, maybe the federal government ought to help pay to renovate the place.

I say let's pass the hat and help USC get their own stadium. I'll give the first donation.

Hey that's a great gesture and it is much appreciated. But, hey, let's be realistic here. With the rising cost of inflation, coupled with the increased cost of fuel, that Stadium is gonna cost more cheese than anybody can imagine.
So, I would propose that everybody not get their kids anything for Christmas this year, and just pass that savings over to: PO Box 213, Santa's not coming to Bama aka Get the Trojan's home for the holiday's, Los Angeles, Ca.
Anyway, I think that this will be the fastest way to get the funds, that the needy Trojan family, will have to have to get through the holidays. Thanx again!

    TT (#6):

Actually, Louisville built their stadium with under 70 million in private funding after the KY state assembly refused to approve tax money for it...

The construction included parking garages and moving historical buildings on campus and every seat is a chairback...

While the Trojans would need more than a capacity of 42,000; you can see that with the proper fundraising administration USC could easily collect enough cash to build themselves a nice on-campus home with or without state money...

Or are Trojan boosters not as numerous and giving as Cardinal boosters?

Well, as you know, a degree from USC isn't what it used to be. What with all our friends comin' over from foreign countries, takin' all of the "good jobs", I might really be hard pressed to find too many grads who are still employed. Well, there are alot of fast food joints opening up, so I suppose some of them still have jobs. I think that it would be a great idea to build the Stadium over in "Bagdad West", but from what I understand, all of the armed security companies are over in Bagdad East already. I don't know how the builders could ever complete the "project" without armed escorts. Well, at least the nightly news might be exciting for some time. That might be something to look forward to. We could probably have used the LAPD, but from what I understand, they are not allowed to enforce the law anymore. Seems as if too many criminals (caught in the act), had their constitutional rights violated, in that they were unfairly treated while they were trying to escape justice. So, it's just better that the LAPD write tickets to law abiding citizens all day long, rather than risk being mean to just one more escaping felon.

If the Trojans move to the Rosebowl, i would like to see them schedule Michigan for their first game!!!! For one it would be a game oozing with tradition and history.......and also an easy win for USC.......it would be a great way to kick off a new USC home =)

    M GO BLUE:

You've got to stop with the "Rodney Dangerfield routine". Lloyd Carr went 121-40 in his 13 years at Michigan. That's a .752 winning percentage. Michigan just overtook Notre Dame for history's all-time winning percentage at around 74.4%. Seems to me that old Lloyd was keepin' up pretty well with Michigan's great tradition. You'd have us all beleiving that poor ol' Michigan might never win another game. I know that we'll get to kick your butts in the Rose Bowl (one way or another) many more times in the future.

Geez this is sad. I just didn't realize that there are still schools that can't afford to build their own stadiums.

If USC doesn't mind playing in Alabama there's always Legion Field.

I wish that we could drop by more often. We used to have some pretty "good times" when "The Bear" was runnin' things. I really doubt if anybody would invite us down for a "scrimmage" though. Yep, those days are long gone. Come to think of it - I doubt if UL-Monroe gonna get invited back anytime too soon either.

C'mon TT, no more LA Monroe jokes, please....That wound doesn't even have a good scab yet.

Sounds like the LA Memorial Coliseum Comm. might be out of a job if USC bolts. What else do you do with the place besides a track meet? I guess Rap concerts could be a way to raise some cash...

Tommie T, Lloyd Carr started out of the gate with a bang........but could'nt keep up the pace the last few years.

I don't expect a Big 10 championship every year.......I don't expect to beat Ohio State every year.....I don't even expect to win our 1-AA games.......but i would like to think that we could at least hang with great schools like Appalachian.............problem????? We were underperforming on a consistant basis.......

Anyone remember when M GO BLUE predicted an Ohio State victory over Michigan???? Yeah, M GO BLUE predicted a loss do to the offense having way too many three and out's..........we scored three points........it's a sad day when M GO BLUE who has never played football at any level and never coached, can call it before it happens.........
