Beamer: Georgia spied on our practices

Virginia Tech head coach Frank Beamer is closing much of the Hokies football practices to the media and the public this year.

While explaining that the new policy was more in line with other ACC teams, he also pointed out that VaTech's experience with Georgia in last year's Chick-fil-A Bowl had more than a little to do with the decision.

"We practiced out at Georgia Tech and we let all kinds of people through there ... people we didn't really know," Beamer said. "And I thought it hurt us in the bowl game. I'm not blaming anybody ... but I thought Georgia knew exactly what we were doing in several situations.

"What we've done is when we get to 'team' type stuff we're closing practice down. I think that's in our best interests. I want to give our football team the best opportunity to win on Saturday."

So... there it is. Beamer things Georgia spied on the Hokies (and they very well may have, I don't know... but neither does Beamer).

Correct me if I'm wrong here, Coach, but wasn't it the Hokies that got faked out of their cleats by a Bulldog trick play? Again, I'm not saying Beamer is wrong, but I don't remember any VaTech tomfoolery getting blown up by tipped-off UGA players.

ANYWAY... Virginia Tech is closing most of it's practices. And y'all have Beamer's paranoia Georgia to thank for it.

Well, look who is calling the kettle black. Jim Grobe at Wake Forest has open to public practice. Now go back and review the tape of last years game and tell me who was watching what practice. Had to have the governor whime and cry to get into the ACC now look who's embrassing us.

Mrs. ACC, WHAT? VT had the #1 rated defense last year, and the offensive scores seemed to have more to do with the Deacon's being outclassed physically.

And Sean, what team do you root for? And exactly how does Tech cheat?

That being said, from what I remember of the game, it was Tech's inability to hold the ball that cost them the game, even if Georgia did know what was coming (not saying they did). However, it also sounds like Beamer just wants to be happen it doesn't happen in the future, regardless of wether or not it happened in the past.

Can't say that I blame him. If I was HC somewhere, I wouldn't hold open practices very often. Maybe in the off-season, but that's it. Why risk it?

    #4 - Sean

I can't remember VT cheating ever; they're just really ghetto and do stupid stuff like kick opposing players while they're on the ground and run illigal dog fighting rings.

    I agree Mike Dawg,

In high school, a rival stole our playbook and the coach only changed 3 formations. Our rival lost knowing our plays, but not knowing when we'd run them(we ran a single wing offense).

This is not new. Some rumors of teams who cheat err, spy?...Anyone?...

as a mountaineer and big east fan, im glad miami,v.tech, and boston college left for the ACC.

For one the big east is stronger and has a wider market.Miami fell off and become thug U like it was in the past.V tech has a coach accusing a university of spying(cheating) and his former players are doing ridiculus things in their private time.

Im predicting the ACC to be like it was last year 1 or 2 good teams and a bunch of mediocre teams

Yeah Georgia cheated. The Dawgs only trailed 21-3 at the half to throw off the spy chasers. Then they used that knowledge in the second half to mount that comeback. I am sure it had nothing to do with Georgia's defense stuffing the Hokies, or Va. Tech not being able to hold onto the ball. We need to head up to Athens and get those spies to go to Pakistan and find Bin Laden for us.

Of course a Cane fan would have the attitude "everybody cheats". No surprise there. To paraphrase the plaque on my mom's wall, you live what you learn.

And IBleedOrange, regardless of whichever flavor of orange you bleed, I don't think you want people judging your entire team and school by the actions of a few of your less-than-model-citizen alums.

One more thing. I didn't see Beamer accuse ANYONE of cheating. Even if Tech did spy on WF (I couldn't find the article, but I remember a similar one about WV being accused of spying on Marshall's practice a couple of years ago), which I kind of doubt, how is scouting an opposing teams OPEN practice cheating? Maybe not very sporting, but I don't think it's cheating. Hence the term OPEN practice.

I listened to a great interview of Frank Beamer on the Jim Rome radio show. Rome asked Beamer about these exact comments.

Beamer came right out and stated he was NOT accusing UGA of anything. He was simply stating lots of people showed up to their practice. He doesn't want to take the risk of things about their practices spreading via word of mouth. It's a reasonable concern.

Beamer is a pretty stand up guy, accusing another program of cheating isn't his s-t-y-l-e.

#26 yes i'm sure LSU will be the favs at home LSU is good at home. Don't forget some things though, VT is coming in with the nations best defense and pass attack. I feel like Bud Foster will have a great game plan. You all are breaking in a new and unproven QB. I think VT will blitz the hell out of him, force him into some mistakes and everyone knows VT is tops when it comes to capitalizing on mistakes. VT by 7 my margin. The SEC has traditionally huge men on the O-Line VT's smaller, quicker D will be too much for them. I expect VT to shock the nation and pull this one out VT 20 LSU 13. 10 of the 20 points will be scored or accounted for by the defense.

Are you trying to keep your confidence levels high by making comments against the team who will hand you your first loss of the season? Don't worry it will be a great game. Afterwards, the Tigers should still hold their heads up high because afterall they lost a hard fought game to the Hokies.

Going to their home and stomping on their mascot painted on the field at the 50. Didn't help they got waxed anyway. But my point, Miami has a distatsteful swagger/attitude nobody likes unless your a BLOWER fan. In turn they disrespect the rest of college football. I hope they go to Norman and try that shit. hokie4life #39:

You and your entire program is ALL TALK and NO ACTION. Get a fricking clue man, VT sucks and they've never done ANYTHING in their entire HISTORY of putting on pads.

You live in such a glass house it's not even funny. One word for you: Marcus Vick. Buying underage girls alcohol, wreck less driving, possession of marijuana, flipping the bird to fans (must run in that trash family), pushed a WVU assistant coach, AND then he violently stomped on a UL player's leg. Despite all that - Vick was allowed to play football by your 2nd rate coach. So I'm not sure I'd bring up Warrick playing with some misdemeanor charges.

By the way, when is the last time VT beat FSU? Oh yeah, 1975. VT has never beat Bobby Bowden and they never will. FSU simply OWNS VT. How can you talk trash when your program hasn't even beat FSU in over a quarter century??? Get a clue.

Not to mention your crappy program has never accomplished ANYTHING in it's history - what a joke.

In VT's entire HISTORY they've only won SIX conference championships, six!? WOW that's DOMINATION - not. VT has only won ONE of the MAJOR BCS bowls in their entire history - 1995 Sugar Bowl. Oh yeah, VT's has a LOSING all-time Bowl Record, 7-13. Damn, they've almost lost twice as many bowls as they've won - pathetic. FSU is 15th in all-time winning percentage, VT is only 41st.

You can sit there and cry all day about the 1999 NC but the fact is VT has done the same exact thing.

Bottom line: FSU 2 NC's, VT ZERO.

Your program has never done ANYTHING and has never been better then FSU at ANYTHING.

You have a lot of nerve talking that shit when your program is a joke compared to FSU.

Come back to me when you've actually accomplished something worth while.

Odd, weird, out-of-character, nothing so much as scratches the surface. I guess coaches go through phases just like their teams, because lately Beamer hasn't been all there, at least not from where I sit. He's always been one heck of a coach, one heck of a man in general. In recent years he's been occasionally prone to making excuses. Beamer & Nehlan were tight, and the VA Tech/WVU match-up was every bit as big as Pitt/WVU. We looked forward to it every year. Then, I think it was 6 years ago, VA Tech came in to town, nationally ranked, heavily favored, and raring to roll. Were it not for a fumble returned by Tech for a TD, they were never in the game. Even with 2+ minutes left and their offence on the field, they just quit. I couldn't believe it. That was not a Beamer team out there. After the game there were reports of Frank Beamer making comments about death threats and his entire team being in fear of their lives. No VA Tech team that has ever taken the field has ever feared anyone they were about to play, especially not WVU. Following this were the issues with Marcus Vic, and now this. I don't under stand it. I have to believe it's all been taken out of context some how, because this is not the Frank Beamer I have come to admire as one of the best coaches out there. "All talk & no action..."? Someone has forgotten VA Tech won the ACC their 1st year in the conference, and they've been among the top teams in the ACC ever since. I can't imagine a true Mountaineer not missing the games against VA Tech and the Black Diamond Trophy. I wish they'd found a way to stay in the B.E. As for what's going on with Beamer, your guess is as good as mine.

#40 take a pill man your totally pissed. Have you not been taking your meds? I bet you'd like to find me and stomp on my leg wouldn't you? As far as I know Beamer don't condone that activity by his players. As you should remember, VT suspended Vick and kicked him out of school for an entire academic year. Plus suspended him for several games for conduct. VT did what it could to turn a thug into a person, it didn't happen. If you forgot last year he was kicked out of VT permanently. If he would have kept his nose clean, he would have played last year. MV only played like 1 1/2 seasons at VT where he could have played for 4 or 5. He had all of the talents Michael did and could have been one of the best QB's in the country. Yeah VT hasn't enjoyed all the past success as other top programs or in FSU's case former top programs, but in just a few short years VT has gone from cellar to stellar. I can think of only a hand full of times FSU and VT have met up in the past 10 years or so. Several of those were in the not so neutral site of Jacksonville FL. We've played Miami year after year since the mid 90's. Guess what? VT has an edge on Miami 8 games to 7. Does that sound like total domination over a team you play year after year? Nope, maybe my point is if VT and FSU were to face each other year after year like the Canes and Hokies do the outcome would be different. You can't win em' all. You face a team like Miami year after year you create a rivalry which is what makes college football so great. I would say that the Miami VT series has become one of the best rivarlries in college football. Neither team owns the other. Stop living on your past success and look to the future man. Living in the past is dangerous. Let's wait till September and see how it all unrolls. You should have that mentality about your team. I can tell your a true FSU fan. That's great. Just know that FSU will lose in Blacksburg this season. We have to win one against you all eventually. It will be this year. At home at Lane. VT is hungry for a win against FSU as am I. But for now we are favored to win the ACC and if we can go to Baton Rouge and pull that one out, we could become National Title Contenders.

I'm not pissed, just tired. Because on EVERY thread no matter what someone says, you have to find a way to take a cheap shot at a program.

    You've taken cheap shots @:

    UF

    FSU

    UM

    USC

    LSU

Just off the top of my head. I actually like VT and will pull for them in most games this year. You just need to chill out though because no matter what someone says on another thread you'll take a cheap shot at someone else's program.

For example: I made a comment about UM being ranked 31st on the new thread about the AP Poll ranking - all I said was I thought that was too low. I never said a single word about VT. What do you do? You respond to my comment attacking UM & FSU for no apparent reason. The thing is, you do this on almost every thread you post on. It really comes across as extreme jealousy seeing how your so aggressive to try to attack other programs and bring them down.

Just calm down and focus more on VT without bashing everyone else along the way.

As far as VT beating FSU in Blacksburg - it's possible. But, I'll believe it when I see it.
