Morgantown FD orders couches removed from porches
Prior to this week's game between Virginia Tech and West Virginia, the Morgantown Fire Department sent out 500 letters of abatement to residents of the Sunnyside neighborhood ordering residents to move all indoor furniture out of their yards and off of their porches.
Sunnyside was the neighborhood where most of the trouble occurred in 2003 after the Mountaineers defeated the Hokies in a Wednesday night game. City crews will start removing furniture Friday morning and $1,000 fines will be assessed for "failing to remove a fire hazard." WVU officials have threatened to take away athletic event privileges or expulsion for lawbreakers.
The Morgantown FD will double its usual manpower from 11 to 22 firefighters on duty Saturday because of the possibility of problems. West Virginia State Police will add 20-30 additional troopers as well (55-60 is their usual number.)
University officials have also said there will be no tolerance for illegal behavior inside the stadium. Officials also distributed information packets to students in Sunnyside encouraging good behavior.
