Starting DE nearly killed in DUI moped crash

Starting senior DE Joe Monty needed about 100 stitches to close the severe cuts on his face, head and legs after he crashed his moped into the back of a stopped car. Monty was cited for DUI in the accident.

"He is very lucky to be alive," Mike Hanson, public information officer for the Madison Police Department, said Friday. "I'm not medically trained but we were told he was lucky to be alive and that his face had severe trauma."

Drinking and driving gets taken to a new level when you're talking about operating a 2 wheeled machine. Personally, I wish everyone that decided to drink and drive would get on a bike rather than try driving a car. The likelihood of someone other than the "driver" getting hurt is greatly reduced when you go from a car to a bike. As well, the intoxicated person would probably be less likely to drink and drive again. That said, I hope he has a full recovery and has learned his lesson.

I want to just put myself into his shoes. I'm driving (how fast?) down some street, i'm buzzing damn good. I choose... very smartly i might add, to drive a moped of all things. I'm probably going down to the store to get some food and or alcohol. As i'm thinking whether to buy the 120 proof liquer or a mass of beer as i look forward i see a car that slammed on the brakes... only problem, the car was parked and i went face-first into a car (window?) ---- Someone who sees news on this should post on his condition, i feel for the guy... a lot of people make the same pistake every day!

Too bad the Kid got cutt up.I remember when I was that age, everybody makes mistakes ,hopefully he will learn from his. I ride a Suzuki FA 50 on a daily basis, you really have to expect every vechicle to jump out in front of you. A lot of young people are involved in vehiclular accidents every day alot of it is do to being overconfident and with inexperience and alcohol it is truly a deadly combination.

Hey wareagle524 riding a moped is like riding a big woman its alot of fun, you just dont want your friends to see you doing it.With todays fuel prices you should consider purchasing one.I filled up mine the other day with 88 cents. Never been to Madison. Cheap transportation is a lot of fun.Its not as intemindating as the larger bikes and it has its limitations like only 30 mph. You probably ought to get you a Honda Metro or a Vespa. I aint gay and my bike is not for sell.

There is no shortage of fat women in madison! The only thing harder than getting a beer on state street is finding a girl under 160lbs!!! HA!

My fiance's sister is a student at UW. She was walking down the street with some girlfriends when Joe Monty drove by on his moped yelling "SLUTS!!!" and not paying attention to the car ahead of him. Seconds later he smashed into the back of the stopped car.
